Light on the Waves: Shimmering Raden Waves on a Matcha Bowl with Kintsugi
Aizu-Hongo ware has a rich history that dates back to the Sengoku period. Over the centuries, it has retained its reputation for simple yet refined beauty and functionality. This matcha bowl, from the Showa period, represents the harmony between tradition and modernity. The deep black of the bowl contrasts beautifully with the blue glaze and raden inlays, creating a visual dynamic that is both powerful and serene.
The kintsugi restoration involved using urushi lacquer to bond the broken parts, while raden was applied to enhance the beauty of the bowl’s natural design. White urushi was used to draw delicate lines that bring out the contrast between the materials, giving the piece a quiet strength and focus. The waves of raden inlay shimmer in the light, transforming with every angle, creating a living, breathing work of art.
